– *Theme:* *Beyond Political Independence: From Aid To Ownership — Decolonizing The African Mind To Build A Self-Reliant Youth Generation
In 1960-1963, Africa lowered the colonial flags and raised our own.
*But are we really free?*
*We are politically free, but economically enslaved:*
Africa holds 30% of the world’s mineral reserves, 65% of the world’s arable land, 90% of platinum and cobalt, 40% of gold. Yet we import food worth $50 billion annually from outside Africa. We export raw coffee at $2 per kg and import the same coffee as Nescafe at $20. We export crude oil and import fuel. The youth see this — they are jobless not because there are no resources, but because we don’t OWN the value chain- We are politically free, but mentally colonized:
The African education system still teaches that success is speaking perfect English or French. An African child can name 10 American presidents but not 5 African liberation heroes. Our legal systems, our dress codes, our beauty standards, our textbooks — all still copy Europe. As Ngugi wa Thiong’o said, the worst colonization was of the mind.
*We are politically free, but addicted to aid:*
In 2023 alone, Africa received over $60 billion in Official Development Assistance. But for every $1 of aid, $3 leaves Africa through illicit financial flows, profit repatriation, and raw resource underpricing. Aid has built a psychology of begging. Youth are taught to write proposals to donors, not to build industries for their own people. This conference says
*PILLAR 1: FROM POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE TO ECONOMIC OWNERSHIP*
This pillar argues that the next liberation war is economic.
– *Land:* Who owns African land? Why are youth landless in a continent with so much land? Discuss land grabbing, commercialization, and youth access to agriculture.
– *Minerals & Resources:* Case of DRC Cobalt — 70% of world’s cobalt is in DRC, powers every iPhone and Tesla, but DRC youth are poorest. Who owns the mines?
– *Data & Digital:* Africa’s data is owned by American companies — Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Instagram etc. Africa’s youth create content, but profit goes to Silicon Valley. In addressing this — how can African youth own data, build African apps in Swahili/ and our local languages?
– *Value Addition:* Don’t export what you don’t process. Coffee, cocoa, cashew, gold — must be processed in our countries, by ourselves and consumed by the population
*PILLAR 2: DECOLONIZING THE AFRICAN MIND*
This is the most powerful pillar. It says colonization never ended; it just changed uniform from military to mental.
– *Education:* Why does our curriculum still glorify Vasco Da Gama discovering Africa, as if Africans didn’t exist before? Why is African history optional, but European history compulsory? Youth demands decolonized curriculum where Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Mwalimu Nyerere, and Queen Nanny are taught as heroes.
– *Language:* Language carries culture. When we abandon our languages, we abandon our science. Why can’t a child learn Physics in local language or Swahili? Rwanda is trying. Why not other countries copy the same?
– *Culture & Identity:* Why is straight hair considered professional and natural African hair considered unprofessional? Why is African print worn on Friday only? Decolonizing the mind means African is beautiful, African is professional, African is enough.
– *Religion & Psychology:* The inferiority complex — that white is superior, foreign is better.
The conference will challenge youth to unlearn self-hate and learn self-love.
*PILLAR 3: BUILDING A SELF-RELIANT YOUTH GENERATION*
– *Self-Reliance is not isolation:* It means Africa must fund its own development through taxes, savings, and Pan-African trade (AfCFTA — African Continental Free Trade Area), not donor conferences in Brussels.
– *The Youth Demographic Dividend:* Africa is the youngest continent — 60% under 25. By 2050, 1 in 3 young people on earth will be African. If we don’t empower them now with ownership mindset, we will have chaos. If we do, we will have the world’s workforce.
– *Practical Ownership Models:* Youth will showcase a youth who already own — a 23-year-old in Ntinda making soap, a girl in Gulu exporting shea butter, a student in MUBS coding mobile money app. Blogger should interview them during Innovation Showcases-
*Pan-Africanism* Old Pan-Africanism was about presidents. New Pan-Africanism is about youth connecting via WhatsApp, TikTok, buses from Kampala to Nairobi to Kigali, Ghana to Sierra Leone trading without visas.
