President William Ruto has officially launched the construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension at Narok Teachers Training College, marking a significant step in Kenya’s infrastructure development.
The project forms part of the broader Standard Gauge Railway expansion aimed at improving regional connectivity and boosting trade across East Africa.
The SGR line, originally constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation and financed by the Chinese government, has played a key role in modernising Kenya’s rail transport since its launch in 2017.
The new phase will extend the railway from Naivasha through Kisumu to Malaba, enhancing the movement of goods and passengers while strengthening trade links between Kenya and neighbouring countries.
The launch signals renewed momentum for the long-anticipated railway extension, which is expected to drive economic growth, ease transportation costs, and position Kenya as a regional logistics hub.
