Ida Odinga Embraces UNEP Appointment, Reflects on Personal Journey Amid Public Attention

Ida Odinga has warmly welcomed her appointment as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), describing the role as an “honor.” In a public statement, she expressed her gratitude to all those who have congratulated her since the announcement, saying, “To me, it is an honour, and I am happy about it.”

The appointment, announced by President William Ruto on January 23, 2026, fills a key diplomatic position left vacant after the reassignment of Ababu Namwamba as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda. Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, praised Mama Ida for her extensive contributions as an educationist, civic leader, and advocate for social justice and gender equity.

Ida, the wife of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, also shared with the public her ongoing journey of resilience following the loss of her husband in October 2025. She reflected on the profound personal changes she’s experienced, including the public perception of her as “the widow of Raila Odinga,” a label she is learning to navigate.

A Canon at the ACK Church, Mama Ida also spoke candidly about the overwhelming media attention she has been receiving since her husband’s passing. “These days, every time I switch on the TV, I see they are talking about me. Every time I buy the newspaper, it’s ‘Ida Odinga.’ But I don’t fear anything; God is with me,” she remarked with quiet strength.

Throughout her career, Ida Odinga has made significant strides in education. She started as a teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi and later taught at Kenya High School for over a decade. Her passion for social justice, gender equality, and environmental issues aligns with her new UNEP role, where she is expected to advocate for sustainability and green initiatives on the global stage.

In addition to her new diplomatic duties, Ida’s appointment comes at a time of reflection and healing. Despite the pressures and challenges that accompany public scrutiny, she remains committed to her mission of service, fueled by faith and a strong sense of purpose.
