TANZANIA: Grief Turns to Protest as Gen Z Youths Disrupt Burial of Teen Who Died in Police Custody

Moshi — Tension and chaos marked the burial of an 18-year-old youth who died while in police custody in Kilimanjaro Region, after Gen Z youths disrupted the ceremony demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased, identified as Michael Rambau, allegedly died by suicide while being held at Moshi Central Police Station, according to police statements. However, the official explanation has been strongly disputed by family members, friends, and youth activists who insist there are unresolved questions surrounding his death.

Burial Ceremony Disrupted

Trouble erupted as mourners escorted the coffin to the burial site at the family home in Karikacha Street, Rau Ward, Moshi District. Groups of youths, many identifying themselves as Gen Z activists, surrounded the coffin, chanting slogans and demanding justice for the deceased.

Eyewitnesses said emotions ran high as some mourners refused to allow the burial to proceed, insisting that the truth behind Rambau’s death must first be established.

“This is not just a burial. We want answers,” one youth was heard shouting during the commotion.

Police Version Questioned

Police authorities had earlier said that Rambau took his own life while in custody, a claim that has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of detention conditions at police stations.

Family members questioned how an 18-year-old under police supervision could allegedly commit suicide without intervention. They called for an independent investigation into the incident.

Growing Youth Activism

The incident reflects growing youth activism in Tanzania, particularly among Gen Z, who have increasingly used public gatherings and funerals to protest alleged abuse of power and demand accountability from authorities.

Observers note that the disruption was not only an expression of grief but also a broader statement against what youths perceive as systemic injustice and lack of transparency in custodial deaths.

Calls for Investigation

Human rights activists and community leaders have urged authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the facts and calm public anger. Some warned that failure to address such concerns could deepen mistrust between the police and the public.

By late afternoon, calm was gradually restored, and the burial eventually proceeded under tight security.

Conclusion

Michael Rambau’s death has added to a growing list of cases that have sparked national debate over police conduct and accountability. As Gen Z voices grow louder, the incident underscores the urgent need for transparency, dialogue, and justice in cases involving deaths in custody.
