China Warns It Will Strongly Respond to US Arms Sales to Taiwan

China has warned that it will take strong action against continued United States arms sales to Taiwan, saying the move threatens peace and stability in the region.

Speaking in Beijing on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the country will “forcefully counter” what he described as repeated provocations by pro-independence groups in Taiwan, backed by large-scale US weapons sales. He made the remarks during an international relations meeting attended by diplomats and policy experts.

His comments came shortly after China’s military confirmed it had carried out long-range live-fire drills in waters north of Taiwan. The exercises entered a second day, signaling Beijing.
