Deadly Township Attack Leaves 10 Dead and 10 Injured Near Johannesburg

At least 10 people were killed and 10 others injured after unknown gunmen opened fire in a township outside Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday. The attack is the second mass shooting reported in the country this month.

The shooting happened in Bekkersdal, about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. Police said the attackers fired randomly at people in the streets near a tavern or informal bar that was operating illegally. The motive for the attack is still not known.

Gauteng province police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said officers are still identifying the victims. “Ten people are dead. We don’t yet have details on who they are,” she told AFP. Those who were injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and their condition has not been fully disclosed.

Bekkersdal is an impoverished area located close to some of South Africa’s major gold mines. Residents say crime is a constant concern, especially around.
