KENYA:Nyeri Thief Punished by ‘Witchcraft’ After Stealing from Supermarket

Residents of Chaka, Mureru in Nyeri Town were left shocked after a man was seen chewing grass, urinating on himself, and laughing uncontrollably just a few days after allegedly stealing from a local supermarket.

The bizarre incident happened in front of Chietha Supermarket, owned by Jamal Mohamed. According to Jamal, he received a frantic call from one of his workers early in the morning, telling him that a man was acting strangely outside the shop.

“At first, I thought the man was mentally ill,” Jamal told Kampala Eye. “But when I got there, I realized this was something different. People were whispering that this is what happens when you steal from the wrong person.”

Just three days earlier, Chietha Supermarket had been robbed of goods worth thousands of shillings, leaving the owner frustrated and worried about business security.

Jamal did not confirm whether he had used traditional protection methods or consulted a witch doctor, but locals believe the man’s strange behavior was a result of a curse meant to punish thieves.

Witnesses say the man kept crawling on the ground, eating grass like an animal, and laughing non-stop as people gathered to watch in disbelief.

Police officers later arrived at the scene, but it’s not clear if the man was arrested or taken to the hospital. Some residents see this as justice for crime, while others argue that witchcraft is not the solution.

The incident has sparked debate on social media, with many asking whether such traditional practices should still be used in modern society.
