New York, August 23, 2025 — A tragic accident claimed five lives and left many others injured when a tour bus carrying 54 passengers crashed and overturned on a New York State highway on Friday.
The bus, which was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls, veered off the road about 40 km (25 miles) east of Buffalo and rolled onto its side. Police believe the driver, who survived, may have become distracted and lost control at full speed, causing the vehicle to oversteer and flip into a ditch.
The passengers were from China, India, the Philippines, the Middle East, and the United States, authorities said. To assist communication, translators were sent to the crash site.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene. Three medical helicopters from Mercy Flight and three more from other services transported severely injured victims to hospitals. More than 40 people were treated for injuries, including head trauma, broken arms, and leg fractures.
The New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said her team is working closely with local officials to assist the victims. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending investigators to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Police have ruled out mechanical failure and driver health issues. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The bus was on a day trip to Niagara Falls, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the US.
“I’m heartbroken for all those we’ve lost and injured, and I’m praying for their families. Thank you to our brave first responders,” said US Senator Chuck Schumer in a statement.
Blood and organ donor network Connect Life issued an urgent call for blood donations to help hospitals treat the victims.
