Heavy Rains to Hit Kenya From Sunday: Nairobi Among Counties on High Alert

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rains starting Sunday, August 17, that could cause flash floods, strong winds, and property damage in several parts of the country, including Nairobi.

In an advisory released on August 15, 2025, the weatherman said the rains will begin in the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and western highlands, with amounts exceeding 20mm in 24 hours. The downpour will gradually spread to the Central and Eastern Highlands, including Nairobi and Mt. Kenya regions.

The heavy rains are expected to continue until Tuesday, August 19, before reducing in intensity from Wednesday, August 20. A strong south-easterly wind, blowing at over 25 knots (12.9 m/s), is expected to fuel the system in eastern Kenya.
Residents in the following areas should prepare for the wet spell:

Western Kenya: Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet.

Rift Valley & Northern regions: Nakuru, Narok, Uasin Gishu, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Trans Nzoia.

Central & Eastern Kenya: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi.
Nairobi County.

The Meteorological Department warned that the rains may cause:
Flash floods in low-lying areas and along rivers.
Reduced visibility for motorists and air traffic.
Sudden rise of seasonal rivers, even where it is not raining.
Residents are advised to:
Avoid driving or walking through moving water.

Stay away from open fields, trees, and grilled windows during storms to reduce risk of lightning strikes.
Secure roofs and avoid sheltering under trees, as strong winds may uproot trees or damage property.

This warning comes as Kenya continues to experience unpredictable weather patterns linked to climate change.

Authorities have urged the public to stay alert and follow safety guidelines to avoid loss of lives and property.
