Tanzania is celebrating after a thrilling 1-0 victory over Mauritania in the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), played on August 6, 2025, at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The win takes Tanzania to six points from two matches, placing them at the top of Group B and securing their spot in the quarterfinals.
The only goal of the match came in the 89th minute. Experienced defender Shomari Kapombe finished off a clever pass from Iddy Nado, sending the home crowd into wild celebration.
His perfectly timed run and calm finish past Mauritanian goalkeeper Abderrahmane Sarr was enough to seal the win.
The game was closely contested, with both teams missing key chances. Mauritania’s Mohamed Zweide, El Mami Tetah, and Ahmed El Moctar challenged Tanzania’s defense, while Feisal Salum and Nado tested Mauritania at the other end.
In the second half, Tanzania looked more dangerous. Substitutes Ahmed Pipino and Nassor Saadun added pace and created more pressure. In the 80th minute, Cheikh Hattab forced a big save from Tanzanian keeper Yakoub Suleiman, and moments later, Clement Mzize nearly scored for Tanzania.
Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Kapombe’s goal gave Tanzania the edge.
