The Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has completed the destruction of 720,000 ballot papers and other electoral materials used during the General Election held on October 29, 2025.
The exercise took place at a designated disposal site in Muungoni, South Unguja Region, under the supervision of ZEC officials and representatives from relevant oversight bodies. The commission said the move is in line with electoral laws and regulations governing the management and disposal of sensitive election materials after the legally prescribed retention period.
Speaking during the exercise, ZEC officials stated that the destruction of the ballot papers was conducted transparently to uphold accountability and maintain public trust in the electoral process. They noted that all procedures were followed in accordance with established guidelines to ensure that no material could be reused or tampered with.
According to the commission, the ballot papers destroyed included unused, spoiled and surplus copies from polling stations across Zanzibar. The process was carried out in the presence of security personnel to guarantee order and compliance with safety standards.
ZEC reiterated that the disposal of election materials is a routine administrative procedure intended to safeguard the integrity of future electoral processes. The commission emphasised that sensitive documents are securely stored for a specified period before being lawfully destroyed.
The October 2025 General Election saw voters in Zanzibar participate in the selection of various leaders at different levels of government. While electoral activities concluded months ago, administrative processes such as auditing and documentation continue as part of post-election management.
Authorities urged the public to remain confident in the electoral system, noting that transparency in handling election materials is essential for strengthening democratic institutions in Zanzibar.
