‘Why Not Now?’: US Defends Review of Relations with Tanzania

The United States has defended its decision to review relations with Tanzania, arguing that the timing of the reassessment is both appropriate and necessary amid evolving political and governance concerns.

Speaking during an exclusive interview hosted by Mwananchi Communications Limited Executive Editor Mpoki Thomson, Acting US Ambassador to Tanzania Andrew Lentz addressed questions surrounding Washington’s decision to re-evaluate its bilateral engagement with Dar es Salaam.

The review, which has attracted public and diplomatic attention, comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of governance, democratic processes, and political stability in Tanzania. Responding to concerns over timing, Ambassador Lentz posed a direct question: “Why not now?”, underscoring the US position that diplomatic relationships must remain dynamic and responsive to changing realities.

According to Lentz, the reassessment does not signal a breakdown in relations but reflects a standard diplomatic process aimed at ensuring cooperation aligns with shared values, mutual interests, and long-term stability. He emphasized that engagement, dialogue, and accountability remain central to US foreign policy in East Africa.

The United States and Tanzania have long maintained ties across security cooperation, trade, health, and development assistance. However, recent political developments have prompted calls—both domestically and internationally—for closer evaluation of governance trends and civil liberties.

The interview forms part of Mwananchi Communications Limited’s ongoing coverage of diplomatic and political developments shaping Tanzania’s international relations, as regional and global partners reassess engagement strategies in response to shifting political landscapes.
