As the term of William Ruto as chairperson of the East African Community (EAC) approaches its end, attention is turning to who will take over the leadership of the regional bloc.
The chairmanship of the EAC rotates among heads of state from member countries. The position is important because the chair leads regional summits, guides policy discussions, and helps coordinate cooperation among partner states.
Ruto assumed the rotating leadership in 2025 and has since presided over meetings focused on strengthening regional integration, expanding trade, and improving cooperation among East African countries.
The EAC currently consists of eight member states: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia, the newest member of the bloc.
According to the EAC’s rotational system, leadership typically passes from one head of state to another to ensure balanced representation across the region. The next chairperson will be selected during an upcoming summit of EAC leaders.
Whoever takes over the role will be expected to continue advancing key regional priorities, including boosting cross-border trade, improving infrastructure links, and strengthening economic and political cooperation among member states.
The upcoming leadership transition comes at a time when the East African Community is expanding both in membership and influence, making the next chairperson’s role crucial in shaping the region’s future direction.
