Real Madrid delivered a dominant performance to defeat Manchester City 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash, while defending champions Paris Saint‑Germain overwhelmed Chelsea 5–2 in an action-packed night of European football.
Valverde Hat-Trick Stuns City
Midfielder Federico Valverde produced a sensational display at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, scoring a first-half hat-trick to put the Spanish giants firmly in control of the tie.
Valverde opened the scoring after racing onto a long kick from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before dribbling past City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to slot home.
He doubled Madrid’s advantage with a powerful low strike into the far corner before completing his hat-trick with a composed finish after linking up with Brahim Díaz.
The victory was particularly impressive given the absence of injured superstar Kylian Mbappé.
City manager Pep Guardiola admitted the defeat was difficult but insisted the tie was not over.
“In football you never know. We will try,” Guardiola said, remaining hopeful ahead of the second leg.
PSG Edge Closer to Quarter-Finals
At the Parc des Princes in Paris, Paris Saint‑Germain moved within touching distance of the quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 5–2.
Bradley Barcola opened the scoring for PSG before Malo Gusto equalized for Chelsea.
Ousmane Dembélé restored PSG’s lead with a clinical counterattack, but Chelsea responded again through Enzo Fernández.
The turning point came after a mistake by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen allowed Vitinha to lob the ball into the net. Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then struck twice late in the match to seal an emphatic win.
PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his team’s resilience despite acknowledging they have struggled to replicate last season’s peak form.
Arsenal Salvage Draw in Germany
Elsewhere, Arsenal preserved their unbeaten Champions League run this season with a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
Leverkusen took the lead through Robert Andrich early in the second half, but Kai Havertz equalised with an 89th-minute penalty against his former club.
Bodo/Glimt Continue Fairytale Run
Norwegian underdogs Bodø/Glimt continued their remarkable Champions League campaign by beating Sporting CP 3–0.
Goals from Sondre Brunstad Fet, Ole Didrik Blomberg and Kasper Høgh secured their fifth straight European victory, keeping alive one of the competition’s biggest surprises.
English Clubs Struggle in Europe
Despite an unprecedented six English clubs reaching the last 16, none managed a win this week. Only Arsenal and Chelsea avoided defeat or remained competitive, highlighting a difficult round for teams from the Premier League.
With second-leg fixtures approaching, the race for places in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League remains wide open.
