Ugandan-Born Zohran Mamdani Becomes New York City’s Youngest Mayor in Over a Century

New York City, the world’s largest metropolitan economy, has just concluded its mayoral election with the historic victory of Ugandan-born Zohran Mamdani. At 34 years old, Mamdani is set to become the youngest mayor in New York in over 100 years and the first Democrat to win a mayoral race since the current U.S. President, Donald Trump, began his second term.

Born in Kampala to scholar Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani’s family has roots in Uganda’s South Asian community and a rich cultural heritage. They lived across Uganda, Cape Town , and New York City, where Mamdani moved at age seven.

His diverse background is reflected in his dual citizenship status and educational path — attending Bronx High School of Science

and later studying Africana Studies at Bowdoin College. Mamdani’s upbringing across continents has shaped a unique cultural and political identity that has resonated in his campaign.

Mamdani began his political career in 2020, defeating a five-term incumbent to represent the 36th Assembly District as a Democrat. His campaign for mayor in 2025, built on progressive values and energized by a revitalized youth movement, led to a surprising primary win against seasoned opponents like Andrew Cuomo.

Leading a city with a nominal GDP estimated at $2.3 trillion, Mamdani now faces the monumental responsibility of governing America’s largest city by population and one of the most economically significant cities worldwide.

His victory marks a significant moment for immigrant representation in U.S. politics, showcasing how diverse backgrounds can shape inclusive leadership for complex urban challenges
