Uganda to Return Lake Victoria Fishing Control to Local Fishermen

The Ugandan government has announced plans to restore control of fishing on Lake Victoria to local fishermen. The initiative aims to ensure sustainable use of the lake’s resources while empowering the communities that depend on them.

Authorities said that only fishermen who are experienced, trustworthy, actively involved in legal fishing, and committed to protecting the lake will be selected.

The move is expected to reduce illegal fishing, improve livelihoods, and encourage responsible resource management.

Local communities around the lake have welcomed the decision, saying it will give them a stronger role in managing their natural resources and provide economic opportunities for families who rely on fishing.
