The Government of Uganda, through the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U), in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) launched free public Wi-Fi at the Kikorongo Equator Monument, a key tourist landmark along the Kasese–Fort Portal Road near Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The service, available at Kikorongo Equator, Kasese Main Street, the Stanley Margherita, and Rwenzori Roads, is designed to enhance visitor experiences, enable live coverage of events like the 4th Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, and support tourists in sharing their journeys in real time.
Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga, State Minister for National Guidance said that, “by bringing free internet to Kikorongo, we are advancing smart tourism and ensuring Uganda’s landmarks are digitally connected, enhancing experiences for both tourists and residents.”
Richard Obita, NITA-U Director of Technical Services, said that, “this launch marks a key milestone in Uganda’s move toward smart tourism, where connectivity meets culture, sports, and exploration.”
“Visitors can now enjoy real-time updates, live streaming, and seamless sharing of their experiences,” he added.
Juliana Kaggwa, the CEO of UTB, said that, “tourism today is digital-first, this initiative positions Uganda as a connected destination, allowing tourists to share experiences globally and attracting more visitors to explore our natural and cultural attractions.”
The free Wi-Fi initiative reflects Uganda’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance tourism, integrate sports and cultural events, and improve visitor engagement, positioning the country as a digitally advanced travel destination in the region.
