Uganda Cranes Confident of Upsetting Nigeria in Must-Win AFCON 2025 Clash

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has warned Nigeria that his team is ready to fight for survival as the two sides prepare for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 group match.

Uganda face Nigeria on Tuesday in a do-or-die encounter after a difficult start to their AFCON campaign. The Cranes lost their opening match to Tunisia and then drew with Tanzania, a game in which Allan Okello missed a late penalty that could have secured a vital win. As a result, Uganda have just one point from two matches.

To keep their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 alive, Uganda must beat Nigeria and also hope for a favourable result in the match between Tunisia and Tanzania.

Despite the challenge, coach Paul Put remains optimistic. He acknowledged Nigeria’s quality, noting that they were finalists in the previous AFCON and boast star players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi. However, he insisted that football always leaves room for surprises.

“We know Nigeria is a very strong team and they have maximum points, but my players will give their best. It will be difficult, but in football, anything is possible,” Put said.

Uganda may gain an advantage as Nigeria have already qualified for the knockout stage. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has confirmed he will rotate his squad, meaning some key players could be rested. This has boosted confidence in the Ugandan camp.

Defender Jordan Obita said team morale is high and players are determined to play without fear. “We know we must win. We have to believe in ourselves and play with confidence,” he said.

Historically, Uganda have reason to believe. This will be only their second AFCON meeting with Nigeria, with the Cranes famously winning 2-1 in the 1978 semi-final. Overall, the two teams have met eight times, with Uganda winning four matches, Nigeria two, and two ending in draws.

The match will be played in Fes and kicks off at 7pm East African time. For Uganda, it is a final chance to keep their AFCON dream alive.
