Uganda Cranes Bounce Back in Style with 3-0 CHAN Triumph over Guinea

The Uganda Cranes delivered a stunning performance at Mandela National Stadium, defeating Guinea 3-0 in a crucial Group C clash of the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) on August 8, 2025.

The emphatic victory, powered by goals from Reagan Mpande, Allan Okello, and Ivan Ahimbisibwe, breathes new life into Uganda’s hopes of advancing past the group stage for the first time in their CHAN history.

Coming into the match under intense pressure after a heavy 3-0 defeat to hosts Algeria in their tournament opener, the Cranes knew only a win could keep their campaign alive.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso made an emotional appeal to fans before the match, urging them to return and support the team despite the disappointing start.

“I beg you to come back and support us; we need you,” he had pleaded and the Ugandan faithful answered the call. Mandela National Stadium roared with passion as supporters turned out in large numbers to back their team.

Uganda struck first midway through the first half. Joel Sserunjogi delivered a pinpoint corner that found Reagan Mpande, who rose highest to head home the opening goal, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The Cranes maintained the pressure, and just before halftime, Allan Okello doubled the lead from the penalty spot. The spot-kick was awarded after a VAR review confirmed a foul on Okello inside the box, and the midfielder made no mistake, rifling the ball past the Guinea goalkeeper.

In the second half, Uganda continued their dominance. A well-worked corner routine in the 67th minute saw Karim Watambala deliver a teasing ball into the box, which Ivan Ahimbisibwe controlled and smashed into the net with his left foot to make it 3-0.

Guinea attempted to mount a comeback, making three attacking substitutions, but Uganda’s disciplined defense held firm. Goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa was composed and confident, pulling off key saves and ensuring a well-deserved clean sheet.

After the match, a visibly proud Coach Byekwaso praised his team’s spirit:
“We knew the pressure was real, but the team was united and determined. This win is for our fans and our country. We refused to dwell on the past —this is the response we needed.”

The victory lifts Uganda to second place in Group C, reigniting hopes of advancing to the knockout stage a feat they have never achieved in six previous CHAN appearances. With two group stage matches remaining, the Cranes are now in control of their own destiny.

Celebrations erupted across Kampala and beyond, with fans optimistic that this performance signals a new era for Ugandan football.

The match, broadcast live on SuperSport and beIN Sports, showcased Uganda’s potential to stand toe-to-toe with Africa’s footballing elite.

As the Cranes prepare for their next fixture, the nation is united behind them, fueled by belief, pride, and a growing sense that history is within reach.
