Uganda and Syria have agreed to strengthen their long-standing relationship by working towards opening fully fledged embassies in each other’s countries.
This was revealed on Tuesday during a meeting between Uganda’s State Minister for International Relations, Mr Henry Okello Oryem, and the Syrian Honorary Consul to Uganda, Dr Tamouh Mustafa.
Minister Oryem said that although Uganda and Syria have never had full diplomatic missions, the two countries have enjoyed warm and friendly relations over the years. He noted that the decision to deepen cooperation marks an important step in formalising and expanding those ties.
The two countries plan to enhance collaboration in key areas such as trade, education, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. Opening embassies will make it easier for citizens of both countries to access consular services and will strengthen political and economic cooperation.
Dr Mustafa welcomed the move, saying Syria values its relationship with Uganda and is committed to expanding bilateral engagement. He added that closer diplomatic ties will create more opportunities for business and people-to-people connections.
Officials from both sides said discussions will continue to outline timelines and requirements for establishing the embassies. Once completed, the move is expected to boost cooperation between the two nations and strengthen their presence in each other’s regions.
The development comes as Uganda continues to expand its diplomatic footprint globally, while Syria seeks to rebuild and strengthen international partnerships.
