Uganda Airlines has announced plans to start domestic flights in 2026, marking a major step in improving the country’s air transport system.
The national carrier, which currently operates regional and international routes, will introduce internal flights connecting key towns and cities within Uganda. This will make air travel faster and easier for Ugandans who have been relying mostly on road transport.
According to Uganda Airlines officials, engineers have already started preparing the aircraft for domestic operations. On Friday, August 22, 2025, engineers installed a new engine on one of the airline’s CRJ 900 Bombardier aircraft (5X-KNP) at Entebbe International Airport.
The airline says these upgrades are part of efforts to ensure safety and efficiency before domestic flights begin.
“We are working on fleet readiness and route development so that by early 2026, Ugandans can fly between major towns easily,” an airline spokesperson said.
Although the official routes are yet to be confirmed, the airline is expected to connect Kampala (Entebbe) to cities like Gulu, Arua, Mbarara, and Hoima, which are economic hubs.
These routes will boost tourism, trade, and investment by reducing travel time from several hours on the road to less than one hour by air.
Uganda has experienced growing demand for faster transport as the economy expands. Road congestion and poor infrastructure in some regions have made domestic air travel an attractive alternative.
The move also supports Uganda’s Vision 2040, which aims to transform the country into a modern and competitive economy.
Uganda Airlines also plans to expand its fleet, introduce online booking for local flights, and offer affordable fares to encourage more Ugandans to travel by air.
Industry experts believe the new domestic service will create jobs, improve connectivity, and strengthen Uganda’s aviation sector.
