Uganda Advises Citizens in Iran to Evacuate Amid Rising Tensions

Uganda has issued an urgent advisory calling on its citizens in the Islamic Republic of Iran to consider evacuating due to a rapidly worsening security situation in the Middle East.

In a statement released on February 28, 2026, Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was monitoring developments with grave concern and urged all parties in the region to exercise restraint.

The advisory highlights that Ugandan nationals in Iran should:

Take serious precautions and leave the country “through any possible means” if able

Inform community leaders of their whereabouts if they remain

Stay indoors and monitor official media and government updates

The government has withdrawn all non-essential staff from the Ugandan embassy in Tehran as a safety precaution, and consular services are currently limited. Organized evacuation information will be released as the situation stabilizes.

Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also strongly advised suspending travel to the Middle East until further notice.

This advisory follows confirmation of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US and Israeli airstrikes. Conflicting reports emerged from Iran claiming its leaders were safe, while Israel indicated evidence confirming Khamenei’s death.

The Ministry emphasized that the priority is the safety of Ugandans and urged citizens to follow guidance from Ugandan authorities and local officials.
