A heartbreaking road accident on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway has claimed the lives of three US-based siblings visiting Kenya for the holidays. Emmanuel DeLeon (13), Kairu Winkelpeck (6), and Njeri DeLeon (16) died following the crash on January 4, 2026.
While Emmanuel and Kairu died at the scene, Njeri was rushed to a Nairobi hospital in critical condition. Despite being placed in a medically induced coma, she passed away on January 16. Their parents survived the accident with minor injuries and remained in Kenya to oversee funeral arrangements.
Family, friends, and the diaspora community have expressed shock and grief at the loss. A memorial service is underway at the International Christian Church Centre in Nairobi, followed by a funeral at Kariokor Crematorium on January 24.
The siblings were described by teachers and friends as joyful, loving, and full of life. Emmanuel, an eighth-grader at Hoover Middle School, was cheerful and mature; Kairu, a first-grader at Royal Legacy Christian Academy, was energetic and playful; and Njeri, a high school junior and cheerleader at West High School, was caring and kindhearted.
The tragedy highlights growing concerns over road safety in Kenya. Police reports show that more than 290 people have died in road accidents during the first 21 days of January 2026, up from 276 during the same period in 2025.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family with medical, funeral, and travel expenses, raising approximately Ksh. 8.6 million ($66,392) from over 870 donations so far.
This devastating accident is a somber reminder of the need for stricter road safety measures and vigilance on Kenyan highways.
