Tragedy in Tamil Nadu: 39 Killed, Over 50 Injured in Stampede at Actor Vijay’s Political Rally

A political rally in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, India ended in tragedy on Saturday, September 27, 2025, after a stampede killed at least 39 people and left more than 50 others injured.

The rally was organized by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.

According to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, the dead included 13 men, 17 women, 4 boys, and 5 girls. Another 51 people — 26 men and 25 women — remain in hospital under intensive care.

Witnesses and local media reported that the rally drew massive crowds, overwhelming security and local infrastructure. Videos showed Vijay standing on top of a campaign vehicle, speaking to supporters.

At one point, he was seen throwing water bottles to fainting attendees and calling for police assistance as the crowd became uncontrollable.

Despite police-imposed restrictions on convoy sizes and rally venues, the sheer number of people attending Vijay’s events has continued to pose safety risks.

In fact, when his party was launched in October 2024, at least six people reportedly died in a similar incident.

Following the incident, 44 doctors from nearby districts, including Tiruchirappalli and Salem, were dispatched to Karur to help treat the injured.

Chief Minister Stalin announced that the state government would provide 1 million rupees (approx. $11,280) in compensation to each family that lost a loved one.

He also confirmed that a commission led by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan has been appointed to investigate the cause of the stampede and recommend further action.

Vijay expressed his heartbreak in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“My heart is broken; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow. I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur.

I pray for a speedy recovery for those undergoing treatment.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent condolences, saying the incident was “deeply saddening.”
Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s most popular actors for more than 30 years, entered politics in 2024 with the launch of TVK.

His rallies have drawn tens of thousands, making him a serious challenger to both the state ruling DMK and Prime Minister Modi’s BJP ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu state elections.

However, this latest tragedy has renewed concerns about public safety at political rallies and the ability of organizers to manage the massive crowds that Vijay’s popularity continues to attract.
