Tanzania’s SGR Services to Resume Today After Temporary Suspension

Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) services are set to resume on January 3, 2026, after a temporary suspension. The suspension, which was put in place earlier this week, affected travel along the SGR routes, causing disruptions for passengers and freight services.

The government has assured the public that operations will return to normal from Wednesday, with both passenger and cargo services expected to be fully operational. Authorities did not specify the exact reasons behind the temporary suspension, but they have stated that the brief pause was necessary for maintenance and safety checks.

The SGR, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving transportation efficiency, has been a key focus for Tanzania as it seeks to modernize its rail network. The services are crucial for both domestic and regional trade, linking various cities across the country and providing a vital transportation route for goods and passengers.

Tanzania’s Ministry of Transport has confirmed that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure the resumption of services without further delays. Passengers and cargo operators have been advised to check schedules and make necessary arrangements ahead of the reopening.

As the new year begins, the resumption of SGR services is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s transportation sector, boosting economic activity and improving logistical connections.
