Tanzania’s Digital Leap: 5G Coverage Hits 26% as Internet Use Surges to 54.1 Million

Tanzania has made big steps in improving its digital infrastructure. By the end of June 2025, the country had reached 26 percent 5G network coverage, marking a significant milestone in its technological development. This rollout is helping more people across the country connect to fast and reliable internet.

The number of internet users in Tanzania grew to 54.1 million by June 2025, a 9.6 percent increase from 49.3 million users in March. This sharp rise shows how digital services are becoming a key part of everyday life for Tanzanians.

According to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the expansion of internet use is being driven by affordable smartphones, competitive data bundles, and increasing public awareness about the benefits of being online. Many people now use the internet for business, education, communication, and entertainment.

Experts say the government’s support for digital transformation has also played a big role. Policies that encourage investment in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) infrastructure, such as the National ICT Broadband Backbone, have helped improve access to high-speed internet, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.

Private telecom companies have also been active, working to expand 5G networks across the country. Though full nationwide coverage is still a work in progress, the current 26 percent is seen as a strong foundation for future growth.

Digital experts believe that continued investment in internet access and digital skills training is essential for Tanzania to fully benefit from the digital economy. With more people online, there are also calls to ensure cyber safety, improve digital literacy, and support local innovation.

In addition, the rise in digital payments and mobile transactions — which recently reached Sh18 trillion — shows how internet access is transforming how Tanzanians manage money.

As the digital landscape continues to grow, Tanzania is positioning itself as a regional tech leader in East Africa.
