Tanzanians have been urged to remain calm and act responsibly if they encounter a human body on the roadside, in a bush, or in any public place, as authorities warn that wrong actions can interfere with investigations and delay justice.
Security agencies and community leaders say cases of people discovering bodies have increased in different parts of the country, often causing panic, confusion, and the spread of rumours. They are now advising citizens to follow clear and lawful steps to protect evidence and ensure the matter is handled properly.
First, do not touch the body. Members of the public are strongly advised not to move, cover, or interfere with the body in any way. Touching the body can destroy important evidence that police need to determine the cause of death.
Second, report immediately to authorities. Anyone who finds a body should inform the nearest police station, local government leader, or call emergency services as soon as possible. Providing clear directions to the location helps officers respond quickly.
Third, secure the area if possible. Without touching the body, people nearby can help by keeping crowds away and preventing unnecessary movement around the scene. This helps preserve evidence and ensures dignity for the deceased.
Fourth, avoid taking photos or sharing on social media. Authorities warn that taking pictures or videos and sharing them online is disrespectful to the deceased and their family, and may also be against the law. Such actions can spread fear and misinformation.
Fifth, cooperate with investigators. Witnesses should be ready to give accurate information to police, including the time the body was found and any unusual observations in the area.
Officials remind the public that handling such situations with care helps the police carry out proper investigations and ensures families get answers. They also urge citizens to uphold human dignity and respect the law at all times.
The government continues to call on communities to work closely with security agencies to improve public safety and prevent crime.
