Tanzania Wins Top Honors at Commonwealth Debt Management Awards

Tanzania has earned international recognition after emerging as the overall winner at the prestigious Commonwealth Public Debt Management Awards, further solidifying its reputation in effective public financial management.

The awards were announced on March 26, 2026, during the Commonwealth Public Debt Management Forum held in London, where Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance, through its Debt Management Division, was also named the Best Debt Management Office in Africa.

Assistant Commissioner in the Government Debt Management Division, Omary Khama, received the honors on behalf of the country, marking a significant achievement for Tanzania’s public finance sector.

The recognition highlights Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening debt management practices, ensuring transparency, and maintaining sustainable borrowing strategies. It also reflects the country’s efforts to enhance fiscal discipline and improve oversight in managing public debt.

Other winners at the event included Barbados, which was recognized as the Best Debt Manager in the Caribbean, and Sri Lanka, which received the award for Best Debt Manager in Asia—placing Tanzania among a select group of top-performing nations globally.

The achievement is expected to boost investor confidence and reinforce Tanzania’s standing in international financial circles, while serving as a model for other African countries seeking to improve their debt management frameworks.
