TANZANIA: New Majority Owner of Nation Media Group Pledges to Protect Editorial Independence

The incoming majority shareholder of Nation Media Group (NMG) has pledged to uphold the company’s editorial independence and maintain high journalistic standards following a landmark acquisition that will reshape the ownership of East Africa’s largest independent media house.

Tanzanian businessman Rostam Aziz, through his investment vehicle Taarifa Ltd, is in the process of acquiring a controlling stake in the Nairobi-listed publisher from the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED).

Commitment to editorial independence

Aziz said the investment would support the long-term growth of the media group while protecting its reputation as a trusted and independent news organisation across East Africa.

He emphasised that the company would continue to operate with strong editorial standards, professional journalism and institutional integrity, reassuring stakeholders that ownership changes would not interfere with newsroom operations.

The acquisition marks a major shift for NMG, which has been associated with AKFED since 1959, when the group helped establish the media company that later became one of the most influential news organisations in Africa.

Strategic investment in regional media

Through the deal, Taarifa Ltd will acquire a holding company that owns more than half of NMG’s issued shares, giving the investor effective control of the media conglomerate once regulatory approvals are secured.

NMG operates television, radio, print and digital media platforms across several countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, reaching millions of readers, listeners and viewers across the region.

The new owner has indicated that the investment will prioritise digital transformation, innovation and regional expansion, areas that have become increasingly important as media organisations adapt to changing consumption habits.

Concerns from media observers

The ownership transition has sparked debate within media circles about the potential impact on editorial independence, particularly given Aziz’s extensive business interests and political connections across East Africa.

Some journalists and analysts say maintaining a clear separation between ownership interests and editorial decision-making will be critical for preserving the credibility of the organisation.

A significant shift in East African media

Despite the concerns, the deal is widely regarded as one of the most significant developments in the East African media industry in decades, marking the end of AKFED’s long stewardship and the beginning of a new chapter for the regional media giant.

If approved by regulators, the transaction is expected to close in the coming months, paving the way for new leadership and strategic direction at Nation Media Group while maintaining its role as a leading source of independent journalism in the region.
