Tanzania Launches Innovative Digital Breast Cancer Project to Improve Early Detection

The Tanzanian government has launched a three-year digital breast cancer initiative aimed at enhancing early detection, diagnosis, and treatment at the primary healthcare level.

This project, running from 2025 to 2027, focuses on underserved and hard-to-reach areas, using digital technology to improve access to breast cancer services.

The “Beat Breast Cancer Project” will be implemented in selected regions including Mwanza, Tanga, Morogoro, and Mtwara on the mainland, along with five regions in Zanzibar.

It involves health facilities such as dispensaries and health centers and engages Community Health Workers (CHWs) to reach rural communities.

The initiative is funded by the Pfizer Foundation and involves collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the President’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG), and Jhpiego, a global health organization.

The project promotes the use of digital tools to enhance screening, allowing for quicker diagnosis and better follow-up care, ultimately aiming to reduce breast cancer mortality through early intervention.

Key figures in the project include Dr. Nassoro Mzee, Assistant Director of Maternal and Child Health at the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Maryrose Giattas Kahwa, Director of the Breast Cancer Project.

The launch was marked by a panel discussion during the 12th Tanzania Health Summit 2025, highlighting the project’s significance in improving public health outcomes.
