TANZANIA: Government, NCBA and Kijani Pamoja Join Hands to Restore Mt. Meru Environment

Arumeru District Commissioner Ahmed Mwinyi, NCBA acting managing director Alex Mziray, and Sarah Scott, founder and executive director of the environmental group Kijani Pamoja, joined forces yesterday to plant trees on the western slopes of Mount Meru at Olkokola.

The initiative is part of the NCBA Group’s regional “Change the Story” program and contributes to its continent-wide commitment to plant 10 million trees by 2030. The project highlights the growing collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society in environmental restoration efforts.

Speaking at the event, Alex Mziray emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. Sarah Scott noted that tree planting not only restores ecosystems but also supports local communities by improving soil health and water retention.

District Commissioner Mwinyi encouraged local residents to participate actively in conservation initiatives, stating that preserving natural resources is essential for the wellbeing of future generations.

The tree-planting activity at Olkokola reflects a wider movement across Tanzania, where organizations and communities are increasingly joining hands to restore degraded lands, combat climate change, and safeguard biodiversity.
