TANZANIA: Government Directs Tax Authority to Improve Revenue Collection Systems

The government has directed the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to strengthen and improve its tax collection systems in order to boost government revenue and support national development.

Officials say TRA plays a key role in nation-building by collecting revenue that funds essential public services such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social programs. To achieve this, the government has continued to roll out wide-ranging economic reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability in revenue collection.

According to the directive, TRA is expected to modernise its systems, close loopholes that lead to revenue loss, and make tax compliance easier for businesses and individuals. This includes the use of digital platforms, better data management, and stronger enforcement measures to curb tax evasion.

The government also noted that targeted policies and clear development plans have been put in place to support economic growth, while reforms in tax administration are meant to create a fair and predictable environment for taxpayers.

Improving tax collection is expected to increase domestic revenue, reduce reliance on borrowing, and help the country meet its development goals. Authorities urged TRA staff to work with integrity and professionalism, while encouraging taxpayers to meet their obligations for the benefit of the nation.

The move comes at a time when the government is focusing on strengthening public finances and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
