MOSHI, March 8, 2026 — Tanzania is set to strengthen its healthcare system with the introduction of a new specialized cardiac treatment unit at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), expected to begin operations in 2027.
The facility, located in Moshi in northern Tanzania, is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to improve access to advanced medical services, particularly for patients suffering from heart diseases. Once completed, the unit will provide specialized diagnosis, treatment, and care for cardiac conditions, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for complex procedures.
Construction of the new cardiac treatment unit is projected to cost more than 25 billion Tanzanian shillings, reflecting a significant investment in strengthening the nation’s healthcare infrastructure. The project is expected to include modern equipment, specialized operating rooms, and facilities for cardiac surgeries, intensive care, and recovery.
Health experts say the new unit will play a crucial role in addressing the rising burden of cardiovascular disease, which has become an increasing health concern in many African countries, including Tanzania. Expanding access to advanced heart treatment locally will also help reduce waiting times and improve survival rates for patients requiring specialized care.
Officials involved in the project noted that the new cardiac center will complement services already available in other major health institutions across the country. It is also expected to serve as a training hub for medical professionals, helping develop local expertise in cardiology and cardiac surgery.
The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to improve specialized healthcare services and reduce dependency on overseas medical treatment, which can be costly for many patients and families.
Once operational, the specialized heart treatment unit at KCMC is expected to become one of the key centers for cardiac care in Tanzania and the wider East African region, providing life-saving treatment and strengthening the country’s medical capacity.
