Tanzania’s government has formally responded to mounting international criticism over the events surrounding the October 29 general election, assuring global partners that it remains committed to transparency, stability, and the rule of law.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo addressed concerns raised by foreign governments, human rights organisations, and diplomatic missions following reports of unrest, arrests, and disruptions that occurred during and after the election period.
Kombo emphasised that Tanzania is a sovereign and peaceful nation and that the government is taking “all necessary steps” to maintain order while ensuring that citizens’ rights are upheld.
“Tanzania values its longstanding partnerships, and we want to assure the international community that the events of October 29 are being handled with utmost seriousness,” he said. “Our institutions are fully engaged in reviewing all matters related to election security and public safety.”
Although international observers have voiced concerns about the conduct of security agencies and the treatment of protesters, Kombo reiterated that authorities acted within the law to preserve national stability during what he described as a “highly sensitive moment.”
The Foreign Minister also noted that the government remains open to dialogue with global partners but cautioned against what he called “misinformed narratives” circulating in international media.
The remarks come as rights groups continue to call for independent investigations into the October 29 incidents, urging Tanzanian authorities to ensure accountability and protect civil liberties.
Kombo reaffirmed that Tanzania’s democratic institutions are strong and capable of addressing any allegations or grievances through established legal channels.
“We remain committed to safeguarding peace, unity, and democratic progress. Tanzania will continue engaging constructively with its partners while prioritising the safety and well-being of its people,” he said.
The government is expected to release additional updates as internal reviews progress.
