TANZANIA: Artistes Should Not Be Penalised for Performing at Political Events, Says Nchemba

Artistes should not be punished or victimised for participating in political events, as doing so does not violate any law, government leader Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has said.

Speaking amid growing debate over the role of entertainers in political activities, Dr Nchemba emphasised that artistes, like other citizens, have the right to earn a living and express themselves freely. He noted that performing at political gatherings should not be misinterpreted as wrongdoing or grounds for professional sanctions.

Dr Nchemba explained that Tanzania’s laws do not prohibit artistes from offering their services at political events, adding that creativity and talent should not be restricted based on the nature of an event, as long as public order and legal provisions are respected.

“There is no law that bars artistes from taking part in political functions. Participating in such events does not amount to breaking the law,” he said.

His remarks come at a time when some artistes have raised concerns about alleged intimidation, blacklisting or public criticism after appearing at political rallies or campaigns. Dr Nchemba urged stakeholders in the entertainment industry to respect the rights of performers and avoid actions that could undermine freedom of expression.

He further called on political actors and event organisers to engage artistes responsibly and ensure that their participation promotes unity and peaceful coexistence, rather than division.

The government, he added, remains committed to protecting the rights of creatives while ensuring that political activities are conducted within the confines of the law.
