TANZANIA: A Heritage with Purpose: Tanzania Breweries’ 92-Year Journey Toward a Sustainable Future

In 1933, what was then Tanganyika witnessed the founding of Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL), a move that would establish one of East Africa’s most iconic beverage companies. Ninety-two years later, TBL remains a key player in the region’s brewing industry — but with a sharper focus on sustainability and innovation.

As global conversations around climate change, corporate responsibility, and social impact intensify, TBL has positioned itself as more than just a brewery.

It has become a driver of economic empowerment, a leader in environmental stewardship, and a champion for community development.

TBL’s sustainability efforts span multiple fronts. The company has invested in water conservation initiatives, reducing its water-to-beer ratio significantly over the last decade.

It has also expanded its use of renewable energy, including solar power at its main plants, and launched recycling programs to reduce packaging waste.

“Our mission goes beyond brewing beer. We are brewing a future where our business grows hand in hand with the communities we serve and the planet we share,” said a TBL spokesperson during the anniversary event.

The company continues to source a majority of its raw materials — including barley, sorghum, and maize — from Tanzanian farmers, creating thousands of jobs and stimulating rural economies.

Through training and input-support programs, TBL has helped smallholder farmers improve crop yields and secure stable incomes.

TBL’s journey is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on responsible consumption and production, decent work, economic growth, and climate action.

As Tanzania’s economy prepares for industrial expansion, TBL’s 92-year milestone serves as a reminder that heritage brands can lead the way in creating a greener, fairer, and more prosperous future for generations to come.
