Dar es Salaam has received 49 new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses, marking a major step toward improving public transport in the city.
The buses began offloading at the Dar es Salaam Port on Saturday, January 10, 2026, and will be deployed on the Kimara route, one of the busiest transport corridors in the city.
According to officials, the new buses are part of the government’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel time, and improve passenger comfort. Once fully operational, the buses are expected to ease pressure on existing services and reduce overcrowding during peak hours.
The buses will operate under the DART (Dar Rapid Transit) system and are designed to carry a large number of passengers while meeting modern safety and environmental standards. They include features such as designated standing areas, priority seating, and improved accessibility for elderly passengers and people with disabilities.
Transport authorities said final inspections and technical preparations are underway before the buses are introduced into daily service. Drivers and conductors are also expected to undergo refresher training to ensure smooth operations.
The arrival of the new fleet supports the government’s broader goal of strengthening urban transport infrastructure and providing affordable, reliable, and efficient public transport for Dar es Salaam residents.
Officials encouraged commuters to use the BRT system, noting that improved services will help save time, lower transport costs, and contribute to a cleaner city.
