A 30-year-old boda boda rider, Antony Otieno, who was found murdered at Meridian Apartments in South B, may have fallen victim to an online fraud group.
A close friend revealed new details about the phone Antony was delivering on the day he died. The information suggests that the delivery could have been a setup by a syndicate that targets riders through fake online orders.
In Lucky Summer, Antony’s family is grieving. His wife, Eunice Atieno, said they ran an online electronics business together. She explained that a woman who introduced herself as Grace ordered an iPhone and asked for it to be delivered to South B.
Eunice said:
“Grace told me she ordered an iPhone and asked Antony to deliver it. I wrote him a receipt and he went. The iPhone he delivered has been found, but his own phone is missing.”
Citizen TV spoke to Tonny Mwenda, the man who gave Antony the phone to deliver. He said Antony had called him saying he had a client who wanted an iPhone Pro Max. Because Antony didn’t have the phone in stock, Mwenda borrowed one from a friend who sells iPhones so Antony could deliver it and return the money later.
Tragically, Antony never made it back. This was not his first encounter with a suspicious order. His brother, Isaiah, said that three weeks earlier Antony almost got scammed at Nation Centre when someone tried to swap a real phone with a dummy phone.
Police say the men who fled the apartment where Antony was found did not leave through the vehicle seen in CCTV footage but escaped through a rear exit.
Eunice is now demanding justice for her husband.
“I want justice for him. What they did was cruel. If they wanted the phone, they could have taken it and left him alive. Now my children have no father. I don’t know what we will do,” she said.
Investigations are ongoing as the family and the public call for the arrest of those behind Antony’s murder.
