Son of Boda Rider Graduates as Doctor from Makerere University

A young Ugandan has inspired many after graduating as a medical doctor from Makerere University despite coming from a humble background.

Kasekende Fulugensio, whose father works as a boda boda rider, earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) during the university’s 76th graduation ceremony held between February 24 and February 27, 2026 at Freedom Square.

His achievement quickly caught public attention across Uganda, with many praising his determination and the sacrifices made by his family to support his education.

From Humble Beginnings to Medical Doctor

Kasekende shared the milestone on the social media platform X, expressing gratitude for the journey that led him to becoming a doctor.

He described his story as a move “from dusty streets to hospital wards,” saying his success is a reflection of God’s grace and the support he received from his father and family.

Growing up with a father working in the boda boda transport industry, Kasekende faced financial challenges like many students from low-income households. However, his determination and focus on education helped him overcome the obstacles and complete one of the country’s most demanding academic programs.

Makerere University Praises His Achievement

Makerere University also congratulated the new doctor, noting that his journey reflects resilience, family commitment, and the power of education to transform lives.

The university welcomed him into the Makerere alumni community and highlighted his story as an inspiration to other young Ugandans pursuing their dreams through education.

Ugandans Celebrate His Success

Many Ugandans on social media celebrated Kasekende’s achievement and wished him success in his medical career.

Among those who congratulated him was Ugandan journalist and podcaster Raymond Mujuni, who praised both Kasekende and his family for their dedication and hard work.

Ride-hailing company SafeBoda also joined in celebrating the milestone, noting that the boda boda industry plays an important role in supporting many families and helping educate children across the country.
