Senegalese Fans in Morocco Face Up to Two Years in Prison Over AFCON Final Chaos

Eighteen Senegalese football fans arrested in Morocco after last month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final are facing possible jail terms of up to two years.

According to prosecutors in Rabat, the fans were involved in acts of “hooliganism” during the final match between Morocco and Senegal. The match was played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on January 18.

What Happened During the Match

Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in a tense and heated final. Minutes before the match ended, some Senegalese supporters allegedly tried to invade the pitch.

At the same time, Senegal’s players briefly stopped the game for nearly 20 minutes to protest a late penalty awarded to Morocco. During the confusion, some fans were seen throwing objects onto the field, including a chair.

Authorities say the disorder disrupted the match, which was broadcast live on television.

Charges and Evidence

The Moroccan prosecution has asked the court to impose the maximum two-year sentence on some of the accused fans. Prosecutors argue that the group deliberately tried to disturb the match and committed acts of violence.

The case against the fans is based on:

Stadium surveillance camera footage

Medical reports showing injuries among security officers and stadium stewards

Reports of damage to stadium property

Officials estimate the damage to the stadium at more than 4 million Moroccan dirhams (about $430,000).

However, the defendants have denied any wrongdoing. They have been in pre-trial detention since the day of the final.

Wider Implications

The case has drawn attention as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. Authorities are keen to show that security and order will be strictly maintained at major sporting events.

The court is expected to deliver its ruling after reviewing all the evidence and hearing final arguments from both sides.
