Senegal secured third place at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a hard-fought 4-2 penalty shootout win over Sudan, following a 1–1 draw in the third-place playoff.
The match was played on August 29, 2025, in Uganda one of the three East African countries co-hosting the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
Sudan took an early lead in the 6th minute through Mohamed Tia Asad, putting pressure on the 2022 CHAN champions. However, Senegal fought back and equalized in the 58th minute with a goal from Seyni Mbaye Ndiaye.
Sudan came close to regaining the lead through Maaz Kandani Koko, but the Senegalese defense held firm, with Issa Kane making a crucial goal-line clearance.
With the match tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, Ugandan referee Shamilah Nabadda signaled for a penalty shootout there was no extra time.
Senegal kept their composure and converted four penalties through Layousse Samb, Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse, and Libasse Gueye. Sudan responded with successful kicks from Mohamed Saeed Ahmed and Ahmed Tabanja, but missed attempts by Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen proved costly.
Senegal’s Daouda Ba was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
The bronze medals were awarded by the CAF Vice President, alongside members of the CAF Executive Committee, Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, and FUFA President Moses Magogo.
To close the event, Ugandan music star Jose Chameleon entertained the crowd with a live performance, adding excitement to the conclusion of the third-place playoff.
