Ruto Urges Calm as Harambee Stars Face Zambia in Crucial CHAN Clash

President William Ruto has appealed to Kenyan football fans to maintain discipline during the much-anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) match between Harambee Stars and Zambia on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi.

The President’s call comes after chaotic scenes were witnessed during Kenya’s previous match against Morocco, where unruly fans breached stadium security. The incident led to a Ksh.12 million fine imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

Speaking on Friday August, 15, 2025, at State House, Nairobi, when he met a delegation of leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties, Ruto said the team has made the country proud with their strong performance in the tournament, and fans must support them responsibly.

“Fans and the people of Kenya, you have done a tremendous job cheering Harambee Stars, but we must do so within the parameters of CAF,” he stated.

He urged supporters without tickets to avoid forcing their way into the stadium and instead enjoy the game at the public viewing areas set up across Nairobi by the county government.

To ensure order and safety, the government has tightened security and announced major traffic changes on match day. Motorists have been advised to avoid Thika Road, as several routes around Kasarani and the city will be closed.

Alternative routes include Kiambu Road, Northern Bypass, and service lanes near Exit 7 and Exit 8. Additional diversions have been provided for those coming from Mombasa Road and Lang’ata Road.

The measures are part of Kenya’s preparations to successfully host CHAN 2024, which has drawn thousands of fans and dignitaries to the capital.

The Kenya-Zambia showdown is expected to be a thrilling encounter as Harambee Stars aim to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
