Ruto Pledges Early Completion of Ngong–Naivasha Flyover to Ease Traffic Ahead of AFCON 2027

President William Ruto has announced that the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover will be completed one year ahead of schedule, delivering a major boost to Nairobi’s traffic infrastructure as Kenya gears up to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, after touring the project site at the busy Ngong Road–Naivasha Road junction, the President said the 255-metre viaduct is now 85 per cent complete and is expected to be finished later this year.

“The Ksh3.8 billion project is 85 per cent complete and will be done later this year, 12 months ahead of schedule,” Ruto said.

Once completed, the flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion on Nairobi’s western corridor, one of the city’s most heavily used routes, particularly during peak hours.

Part of a wider urban transport overhaul

The flyover project comes amid broader efforts by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) to decongest Nairobi through the construction of elevated roads and major interchanges.

In recent months, KURA announced that motorists would soon benefit from two additional viaducts rising across the city centre, designed to improve traffic flow between the Central Business District (CBD) and Upper Hill.

The elevated roads, which resemble the raised sections of the Nairobi Expressway, are among the most ambitious upgrades to Nairobi’s transport network in recent years.

One viaduct will stretch from the Integrity Centre towards the Serena Hotel along Valley Road, while the second will connect the Milimani Law Courts area to the National Library section of Ngong Road.

Backbone of key Nairobi interchanges

Speaking in September 2025, Benjamin Asin, Assistant Director at KURA’s Directorate of Urban Design, said the two viaducts form the backbone of the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass projects.

“A viaduct is an elevated road over land, like what we have in an expressway. It integrates very well in an urban environment so that the visual intrusion is not interfered with,” Asin explained.

He added that the upgrades go beyond easing vehicle traffic, noting that walkways would be expanded from Valley Road to the CBD to improve pedestrian movement.

Focus on pedestrians and cyclists

In addition to roadworks, the projects include wider walkways, cycling lanes, and improved street lighting between Upper Hill and the CBD, aimed at enhancing safety and promoting non-motorised transport.

Rehabilitation works are also ongoing along Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue and sections of Ngong Road, as part of KURA’s broader campaign to modernise Nairobi’s road network.

Strategic route for AFCON 2027

The Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover holds particular significance ahead of AFCON 2027, as it serves as the primary access route to Talanta Sports City, one of Kenya’s flagship stadiums and a central venue for the continental tournament.

With major infrastructure projects being fast-tracked, the government says the improvements are critical to ensuring smooth mobility for residents, visitors, and football fans during the tournament.
