Ruto Heads to Ethiopia for African Union Summit

William Ruto has left the country for Addis Ababa to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly.

The high-level meeting brings together African Heads of State and Government to discuss key issues affecting the continent, including peace and security, economic growth, climate change, regional integration, and institutional reforms within the AU.

Focus of the Summit

During the summit, leaders are expected to review progress on the implementation of Agenda 2063 — the AU’s long-term development blueprint — and deliberate on ways to strengthen trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Security concerns in parts of Africa, governance reforms, and financing of AU programs are also among the top agenda items.

Kenya’s Role

President Ruto is expected to use the platform to advance Kenya’s interests, particularly in trade, climate action, regional peace efforts, and economic cooperation.

Kenya has in recent years positioned itself as a strong voice on climate financing and sustainable development, with the government advocating for fairer global financial systems that support African economies.

Bilateral Meetings

On the sidelines of the summit, President Ruto is also expected to hold bilateral talks with several African leaders and international partners to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

The AU Assembly, held annually at the organisation’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, serves as the highest decision-making organ of the continental body.

President Ruto will return to the country after the conclusion of the summit.
