Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to lead Portugal to a dominant 5–0 victory over Armenia in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
The match, held on Saturday, also served as an emotional tribute to the late Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in July along with his brother Andre Silva.
Before kickoff, both teams and officials observed a minute of silence in memory of Jota. The moment was deeply felt by players and fans, especially as the Portuguese team played its first international game since his passing.
Ronaldo, now 40 years old, continues to extend his record as the top scorer in men’s international football, reaching 140 international goals with his brace in this match. His goals came in both halves, showcasing his continued hunger and sharpness despite his age.
He recently signed a new contract with Al Nassr, a Saudi Arabian club, and helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in June. The one major trophy still missing from his collection is the FIFA World Cup, and the 2026 tournament in Canada, the United States, and Mexico could be his final shot.
Portugal’s third goal, scored by Joao Cancelo, held special meaning. Cancelo celebrated by pointing to the sky, mirroring Jota’s trademark celebration. Coincidentally, Ronaldo’s first goal came in the 21st minute, the same number Jota wore for both club and country.
“This was a sign from Diogo,” said Portugal coach Roberto Martinez after the match. “The players were focused and prepared. Now, we need to recover and get ready for Hungary on Tuesday.”
Joao Felix opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the game and later added a second goal.
Joao Cancelo made it 3–0 with a powerful strike and heartfelt celebration.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in both the 21st and second half to seal the 5–0 victory.
The match took place at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Armenia and marked a strong start for Portugal in Group F of the World Cup qualifiers.
In Group K, England maintained their perfect qualifying record with a 2–0 win over Andorra at Villa Park. However, questions remain over their performance under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
Christian Garcia scored an own goal for Andorra, giving England their first.
Declan Rice headed in the second from a Reece James cross in the 67th minute.
Harry Kane, England’s all-time top scorer, missed a clear chance and was left frustrated.
Also in Group K, Serbia beat Latvia 1–0, climbing to second place. England will face Serbia in a key match on Tuesday.
Portugal’s next qualifier is against Hungary, where fans will hope Ronaldo continues his impressive form. With one of their beloved players now gone, the team appears more united and motivated than ever to reach the 2026 World Cup—and maybe even win it for Jota.
