President Yoweri Museveni has challenged Uganda’s Generation Z, urging young people to shift their focus from entertainment and trends to issues that matter to the country’s future.
Speaking at a press conference at Nakasero State Lodge on Saturday night, the president compared today’s youth with his own generation, saying young people during his time were deeply involved in political activism and the fight for Africa’s liberation.
Museveni said that when he was in his twenties, he was focused on national liberation and leadership, not football or social trends. He recalled that he was only 26 years old when he co-founded FRONASA, a revolutionary movement that played a key role in Uganda’s political history.
“Today, all I hear Gen Zs talking about is vibes and football,” Museveni said. “What is ‘vibing’? What will you eat? How will you defend yourselves and your country?”
The president warned that ignoring economic survival, national security, and self-reliance could put the country at risk. He encouraged young people to take an active interest in productive work, leadership, and national development.
Museveni also revealed that he has begun engaging Gen Zs through online chats and said he plans to continue the discussions to better understand their views and guide them on national issues.
He concluded by calling on young Ugandans to think beyond short-term trends and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of the nation.
