President Museveni Rewards Uganda CHAN Team After Historic Run

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni hosted the Uganda Cranes CHAN 2024 team at State House Entebbe this week to honor their historic performance at the tournament.

The ceremony was attended by key sports officials, including State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, and FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo.

President Museveni confirmed that he had fulfilled his pledge to reward the team with Shs1.2 billion for every win in the tournament. Uganda secured two victories against Guinea and Niger, bringing the total payout to Shs2.4 billion (approximately USD 631,600).

“I promised and I am implementing. Every time you win, I would give 30 million each, and I have already put the money in your accounts,” Museveni said.

Each player and official received Shs30 million per win, in addition to $11,000 already awarded by FUFA for their performances.

Uganda made history by becoming the first Ugandan side to reach the knockout stages of the CHAN tournament, despite a narrow 1-0 loss to eventual champions Senegal at Namboole Stadium.

The team’s achievement marks a major milestone for Ugandan football and highlights the rising competitiveness of the Cranes on the continental stage.

Following CHAN, Uganda is preparing for FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, where they will face Botswana and Algeria. The team also sets sights on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, aiming to build on the momentum from their historic CHAN campaign.

The celebration at State House underscores the government’s commitment to supporting national teams and inspiring future generations of Ugandan footballers.
