President Yoweri Museveni is set to officially open the new Hoima City Stadium today, Wednesday, December 24, 2025, following its handover to the government earlier this week.
The stadium was handed over on Monday by the contractor, Ms Suuma, to the National Council of Sports (NCS). The modern facility has a seating capacity of 20,000 and was built at a cost of 129 million US dollars. It is one of Uganda’s key sports venues planned for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
Ahead of the official opening, Ms Suuma’s Project Manager, Murat Altun, handed over the stadium to NCS Board Chairperson Ambrose Tashobya after a guided tour of the multi-sports complex.
The opening ceremony will include a friendly football match between Kitara FC and KCCA FC, as well as competitions in volleyball, netball, basketball, and swimming. The event is expected to run until late evening.
Tashobya praised President Museveni for investing in sports infrastructure and encouraged residents of the Bunyoro region to attend the event in large numbers. He said members of the public will be allowed to enter the stadium from 9 a.m. using a free ticketing system to help manage crowds. The president is expected to arrive at around 11 a.m., followed by speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a guided tour for invited guests.
The stadium is designed as a multi-purpose facility that can host major sporting events. It also includes rentable commercial spaces such as restaurants to support long-term sustainability.
The Turkish contractor was praised for completing the project five months ahead of the planned 18-month schedule. Murat Altun said the early completion was a major achievement and expressed confidence in working on future projects in Uganda.
Hoima City Woman MP Nyakato Asinansi described the stadium as a major development for the city. She said the facility will support talent development and create economic opportunities for the local community.
The stadium includes a 2,000-seat indoor arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a training pitch, parking space for more than 1,000 vehicles, outdoor courts, offices, and a fully equipped gym.
