Police Seize 990 Litres of Illicit Chang’aa in Siaya, Launch Manhunt for Suspects

Siaya, Kenya — Police officers in Siaya County made a significant bust on Sunday, January 18, 2026, recovering 990 litres of illicit alcohol, commonly known as chang’aa, in the Uuna area of South East Alego location. The discovery came after a dramatic incident involving a motor vehicle and a motorcycle.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the vehicle involved in the incident crashed with a motorcycle, and the driver fled the scene shortly after the collision. Upon responding to the accident, officers discovered 18 sacks containing sachets of the suspected illicit brew.

Details of the Discovery

Five of the sacks were found inside the vehicle, while the remaining thirteen sacks had been concealed nearby, hidden in the vicinity of the crash site. In total, the illicit brew seized amounted to 990 litres, with the NPS noting that it would be used as crucial evidence in ongoing investigations.

Following the seizure, the authorities secured the alcohol and launched a manhunt to track down the suspects involved in the illegal brewing and distribution of chang’aa. The police are determined to continue their operations aimed at curbing the sale of illicit alcohol, which has been a longstanding issue in several parts of the country.
