The National Police Service (NPS) has foiled a suspected terror attack in Nairobi after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
In a statement, the police said the operation targeted individuals believed to have links with the Somalia-based militant group Al-Shabaab.
Weapons Recovered
During a raid on a suspected safe house in Nairobi, officers recovered:
Five AK-47 rifles
20 magazines loaded with about 600 rounds of ammunition
Six hand grenades
A Makarov pistol with 24 rounds
Medical supplies and other logistical materials
Investigators believe the weapons and supplies were being prepared for a possible attack within the city.
Intelligence-Led Operation
According to NPS, the raid followed months of intelligence analysis and coordination among multiple security agencies. The operation was aimed at dismantling a network suspected of planning attacks on civilians, public spaces, and critical infrastructure.
Specialised police units involved in the operation included the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the Special Operations Group.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the NPS said security agencies remain on high alert across Nairobi and the rest of the country.
“The National Police Service continues to maintain heightened vigilance. It is monitoring potential threats and responding swiftly to safeguard the public,” the statement read.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities have not yet released details about arrests linked to the raid. Investigations are ongoing to identify all individuals involved and determine the full scope of the suspected plot.
Kenya has faced several terror threats in the past, particularly from Al-Shabaab, which has carried out attacks in retaliation for Kenya’s military involvement in Somalia.
Security agencies have urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
